A unique country retreat in the King Country, in the heart of the North Island.
Established in 1998, The Lodge & The Forge will enchant you with its native bush surrounds, meandering stream, and majestic waterfall. It is a destination in itself and there is plenty here to keep you entertained.
The lodge has been one of the most popular accommodation choices on the Timber Trail since it opened. They offer both fully catered stays at The Lodge in four ensuite rooms, or self-catering options at The Forge, a 'flashpackers' with shared facilities.
The lodge is situated on 5 acres, surrounded by the Ongarue River and the majestic waterfall. Self-catering from $58pp per night. Evening meal and breakfast available. Not suitable for small children and no pets. Blackfern Lodge can arrange your shuttle and also arrange shuttle or car transfer.
When at the BlackFern Lodge, Experience their Eco Walk
Step back in time and experience the forest as it was hundreds of years ago. Take a 30-60 minute Eco Walk along the banks of the Ongarue River and experience the natural wealth, wonders and creativity of Papatūānuku-Mother Earth.
By day, 600 year old native trees, somehow saved from the extensive logging that took place here, will tower over you. The river is alive with rainbow trout and Tahuna (eels). There are also the native birds! Native bird species abound, including the Kereru (wood pigeon), Tui, Bell Birds, Kōkako, Morepork, Tomtit, Robin, Fantail, Kiwi, Black Shag, Kingfisher, Shining Cuckoo, Long-Tailed Cuckoo, Wax-eyes, Yellowhead and the highly endangered Whio (Blue Duck).
